The annual reading is a spread that takes a look at what the year ahead holds by exploring the energies of each month. Fully six of the cards for 2023 are from the Major Arcana, signifying major life changes. Sometimes it’s good to have a reminder that change can be positive, neutral, or negative, and we can choose to embrace or resist it, but going with the flow can make for a smoother ride. There may be a lot of opportunities coming up for us that we don’t want to miss, and some choice points as we figure out where we want to go next. 

January: Four of Pentacles

Where the suit of pentacles represents the material realm—encompassing home, family, career, finances, and material resources—fours represent stability. We may be seeking or finding greater stability this month. This is a great time to expand or start a business, seek new clients, begin a training or educational path, explore investments, purchase a home, change jobs or career, and say yes to new opportunities. Paying close attention to the opportunities that feel resonant can guide us to greater satisfaction and fulfillment. Things are not always what they seem; giving the unexpected a chance can lead us down a happy road.

February: The Magician

You create your own reality and the world is a vast palette with infinite ingredients just waiting for you to mould and shape them into your heart’s desires. Exploring a few questions can lend insight: What are you letting in? What are you blocking or resisting? Finding ways to come into stronger alignment with our innermost self can open the valve, so to speak, to let in more of what we have been asking for. The Magician knows their power and strength, and they expect things to go well for them. Positive beliefs and expectations are powerful and act as magnets that draw to us similar energies and experiences.

March: Nine of Cups

Following on from last month’s Magician, the Nine of Cups indicates fulfillment and an abundance of resources. This may indicate something arriving this month or that is waiting for us to be ready to receive it. Finding things that lift us up and bring us joy, peace, and happiness is a powerful way to reach a place of receptivity. There is a celebratory energy this month that we can tap into. Knowing that we are worthy and deserving of all we desire and believing that the good things we want will happen for us can help align us to their energies and creates a conduit through which they can flow to us. 

April: Eight of Pentacles

The Eight of Pentacles can herald recognition for a job well done and increase coming to us as a result of the work we do, whether creative or career-related. New projects are fruitful and this month may see us reaping the rewards of past efforts. Seeds we planted earlier are sprouting and ready for us to harvest. There is tremendous abundance available to us. Thanks to our focus and determination, and our commitment to the task at hand, wonderful opportunities are arriving. Remembering that alignment is more powerful than hard work can serve us well this month. It is through our connection to our higher self that we can receive inspired action, which is the most powerful action we can take. 

May: Knight of Swords

The first of two knights in a row, the Knight of Swords signifies a fast-moving energy that may bring a message. Wielding his sword, he cuts through anything that is unnecessary. In addition to being the bearer of a message and swift action, he can also represent outside influences that may present a challenge. Our guidance may be to stay the course and to strengthen our focus, knowing that we are always, inevitably, heading toward the destination we have set for ourselves. The only mystery is the path we will take to reach it.

June: Knight of Cups

Another messenger knight, the Knight of Cups can herald change, romance, or travel. This knight is typically associated with immaturity and frivolity and can encourage us to live in the moment, to do what is fun, and to allow ourselves to experience what thrills us. There need not always be strings attached, and in matters of the heart, we may experience something or someone fun and exciting who is not necessarily after commitment or anything long term. Entering new situations with the mindset of enjoying them for what they are without any further expectations can serve us well.

July: Two of Swords

This card often represents a choice point, and the need to look within to make a decision. What is right for us? What will serve us best? Which choice feels better? The suit of swords is associated with thought and the mental realm, but logic isn’t always the best determiner of outcomes. Paying attention to how something makes us feel and going in the direction of what lights us up or just feels better is a way of following our built-in emotional guidance that flows from the higher self. Relaxing and loosening our grip from the problem can allow the solution to arrive.

August: The Tower

Something is ending, and it is good that it does. The tower crumbles because it is not structurally sound; it is no longer safe and cannot support itself or those who wish to enter it. The infrastructure collapses because it is weak. It is time to let go, make our peace with something, and move on. One way of doing this is to focus on the better that we want to see in its place, the stronger, sturdier, stabler structure. The building is the fun part: what do we want it to look like? How will it be improved? How will it serve us? Visualizing the new and aligning with it can help us to move forward in productive ways.

September: Wheel of Fortune

The wheel is turning in our favor. Change, good fortune, and unexpected turns of events are indicated. Something is getting ready to manifest and we may see it come through this month. The universe is always conspiring on our behalf, and it’s time let it in. The path of least resistance is a way universal energies prepare us to move into what we’ve been asking for. Allowing ourselves to go with the flow and letting go of the desire to control outcomes can be just what is needed to allow us to step into that better place and experience the improvement we seek.

October: Ten of Wands reversed

Releasing burdens makes way for the better to arrive. A holdover from August’s tower card, there still may be some brush that needs clearing. This may refer to a cluttered vibration. Where we are holding onto the past or find ourselves remembering the past, we can choose to shift our thoughts, which directly inform our vibrational output, so that we are focusing on the good and anything we can find to appreciate. Imagining ourselves living the life we desire can be a good way of shifting our focus, clearing up our vibration, and bringing us into alignment with what we wish to manifest. Our thoughts inform our reality.

November: Temperance

Temperance is a card of balance, moderation, patience, and inner growth. This card may encourage us to seek ways to foster our inner growth, which informs our outward reality and the experiences we attract. It may also be encouragement to slow down, take more time for ourselves, and allow ourselves the space of quiet moments in which we simply breathe, relax, and be. Profound healing can happen in that space, which is also a place of energetically resetting.

December: The Hermit

This is the time to go within, to integrate some of the wisdom we’ve gained in recent months. Beginning with August’s Tower card, followed by October’s reversed Ten of Wands and last month’s Temperance, we may have experienced major shifts that we would now benefit from processing and integrating in order to find a place of inner peace. Sometimes, it’s a matter of giving ourselves the space to think and process what has transpired so we can make sense of things and clear mental clutter, preparing the way for more productive thinking and improved focus.

Energies of the Year: Justice

Seeking and finding harmony and balance are indicated throughout 2023. This year may see us experiencing tremendous change and growth, and we are advised to seek stability and balance, to stabilize in the positive aspects of our lives and in our growth. This paves the way for more growth and better outcomes, ensuring that the good will last and become even better.

December is an introspective month, one in which we may find ourselves on a healing journey. We are so very supported by the loving universal energies that are all around us and we’re encouraged to allow that guidance to come through. The cards show us dealing with grief, pain, hurt, loss, or disappointment and working through the emotions to move on and learn what we can from what we’ve experienced. As we shift out of the lower vibrations and move up the emotional scale into a better-feeling place, we find peace, healing, and resolution. This month holds the opportunity for tremendous inner growth and we’re encouraged to do the inner work to allow the powerful transformations to take place within us.

Q1: Overall energies of December: Temperance

Seeking balance, harmony, peace, and resolution is the name of the game this month. We may benefit from moderation and patience. Doing so can promote our inner growth. We are reminded that our outward reality is a reflection of our inner one. 

Q2: Week 1: Nine of Swords

This card says we may be feeling tormented or agonizing over a situation, whether past, present, or future. We are reminded that diamonds are formed under pressure. Through grief and trials, we can transform our pain into something exquisite. For those who are creative, the guidance may be to turn that pain into art. Others may seek to channel this energy into healing and inner transformation. 

Creating, and allowing the creative force to flow through us in whatever way resonates for us, brings forth life-giving energies that also bring us healing and growth. Through the creative process, we may receive deeper understandings and increased awareness—what some may call downloads. Allowing new knowledge to arrive to us can promote our understanding and awareness, paving the way for a better, brighter future. 

Q3: Week 2: Five of Cups

This card encourages us to find a way to move on from loss and disappointment. The Five of Cups often depicts a solitary person, someone who appears to stand alone in their grief and sadness. Five is a number that indicates change and this card encourages us to find things that bring us joy or a break from the ordinary to help us shift the energies. This can help us to shake off the stagnant energies and move up and out of a challenging situation. The next challenge may be to leave behind the past for good, rather than continuing to return to it in our thoughts. The grass is greener where we water it. 

Q4: Week 3: The Hermit

Going within and doing the inner work can help us tremendously after the pain, loss, disappointment, and sadness indicated in the first two weeks of the month. Rather than staying focused on, and therefore giving more energy to, negative feelings, we are guided to find ways to shift the energy. There are many ways to do this, some of them being walks in nature, meditation, journaling, writing, making art, listening to music, playing an instrument, running or physical exercise, or anything that brings you to a flow state. This promotes our healing and provides us with greater clarity and understanding. As we open up to improved feelings, we can find a greater sense of our own value and worthiness and can ground into self love. 

Q5: Week 4: The World

As the last card of the Major Arcana, The World symbolizes completion and fulfillment. We’ve reached the end of the journey that began with The Fool, the first card of the Major Arcana. Inherent in this achievement are mastery and wholeness. In light of the cards for weeks one through three this month, the appearance of The World is significant. It indicates that you’ve done the work and have gone through pain and challenges to reach a place of healing, self knowledge, balance, stability, and self love. You are now ready to enter the next phase of life, greeting it as a better version of yourself and therefore welcoming, in the most fruitful and enriching way, what comes next.

Four is a number of balance and stability, and as we go through challenging and difficult situations, we are guided to find a stable place within ourselves as well as in our external environment. Finding stability and security can bring us a sense of support, which can be crucial when our internal landscape is shifting. Finding a space of your own, a quiet place in which you can journal, create, process, decompress, and just be by yourself can be an important factor in allowing restoration, deep healing, and positive vibrational shifts to take place and to integrate.

Sixes indicate harmony and balance, and this month is bookended by sixes that indicate the overall energies and our guidance for the month. Like a harmonious gateway, these influences make November a container of time in which experiences and energies are flowing to us that can bring us to greater levels of harmony, both in our external, physical world (the Six of Pentacles) and within (the Six of Cups), which is where harmony begins.

November also contains two aces, the Ace of Cups and the Ace of Wands, pointing to the heart and emotional realm, and to manifestations, the will, and action. Together, they indicate that, through our emotions and the experiencing of joy and the higher emotions, such as appreciation and fun, we can allow our heart’s desires to strengthen, grow, and come into being. Something new is available to us this month, and connections and opportunities are waiting in the wings. Taking our attention off the things that have been slow to come and focusing instead on where we easily find happiness can speed everything up.

Pentacles are related to the material, physical realm, and this happy card indicates abundance with plenty to share. New opportunities may be on the horizon, and they could look like new clientele flowing in, new ideas, new business and career opportunities, and new partnerships and collaborations. The universe may be calling you to make the most of the wondrous things that are coming your way, and to consider what exciting things you would do if you had plenty of resources—that is, without getting into a headspace of lack or observing what you don’t have. The idea is to keep the focus positive and be in the energy and the feeling place of having, doing, being, living your best and most ideal experience. This magnetizes it to you like nothing else.

Cups are linked to the emotional realm and the Ace of Cups indicates new love, joy, and emotional restoration coming through this week. New beginnings are in the offing. Energetically, something new may be transpiring in the realm of the heart, and it may have to do with feeling new love or opening or healing emotionally. 

New, heart-centered connections may be coming into being now or may be in a place of developing energetically. Not trying to rush things and making peace with where you are, trusting that it will come about in the highest and best way possible, can provide the nurturing energies that are key to the healthy growth of the new that’s developing.

Q3: Week 2: Ten of Wands reversed

The upright Ten of Wands is a card indicating heavy burdens; reversed, as it is for this week, it indicates releasing those burdens. It’s time to let go. We may be carrying around energetic and emotional burdens that don’t benefit us. We may not even realize we have been carrying them. This week, our guidance may be to release anything that doesn’t bring us joy or make us feel aligned, and to cut the ties with whatever doesn’t benefit us in some way. This work is individual, and by necessity, the focus must be on the self. 

Considering what relationships, habits, routines, and energies aren’t serving us, we can begin to see what we need to release. Also looking at the mental realm and any self-talk or thoughts that play on repeat that don’t serve us, we may be called this week to revise our internal narrative. It can be helpful to replace each negative thought as we discover it with a more positive one and to monitor our thoughts to catch ourselves in negative patterns of thinking. This card can also indicate that something is on its way out, ready to exit our experience naturally, and we could see this play out in various ways. It’s time to make room for growth.

Q4: Week 3: Ace of Wands

The second ace to come in this month, the Ace of Wands may indicate something new coming about as a result of our intention and will. Taking inspired action from a place of alignment with our truth and higher self, or our inner being, is our ally, this week and beyond. Flowing with the path of least resistance can lead us right to the answers, things, ideas, and experiences we’ve been asking for. 

Believing in our desires is like watering a seed. Expecting them to come is like adding fertilizer to the soil. Ideas can be powerful manifestations. Running with ideas that feel good, inspiring, and exhilarating can lead to great things. We can benefit from choosing only positive expectations for ourselves, and doing so deliberately.

With the Three of Wands, one plus one equals three. Two forces coming together co-create and through their synergy, create something new. This could indicate a partnership or collaboration that leads to new ideas and manifestations. We may also be considering how best to navigate new relationships, opportunities, ideas, and physical manifestations that have come into our experience. 

Growth and the ways in which you express yourself, such as through music, art, dance, writing, or some other activity, are highlighted now. The message may be that we find alignment through what brings us joy, and we are encouraged to do those things more often, without getting hung up on the outcomes of our endeavors. When we allow pure creativity and inspiration to flow through us unfettered, the outcome is always wonderful.

Whatever finding harmony looks like for you, this month is a time to rejuvenate, rest, and restore your energy. October is a pentacles-heavy month, ushering in elements of financial abundance and stability. The energies now are supporting us in attaining a more prosperous way of living. If you are beginning a new venture, this card is favorable and says go for it! Good things are to come. Knowing this is so solidifies it.

The Four of Pentacles is material stability and success, financial well being, abundance, and prosperity. Being successful is one thing, being stable in it another. When we trust our own ability to be financially and materially stable, this flows more energies of stability to us. This card may come as a reminder that we are fully capable of being financially and materially stable and prosperous. It can also indicate that new opportunities or the acquisition of land or property are coming into our experience. There is a strong element of trust that comes with this card, which asks us to trust ourselves and our ability to succeed and prosper.

The Nine of Pentacles is a card of abundant material and financial success, perhaps indicating a windfall, inheritance, or influx of money, property, or resources. This month includes its fair share of focus on both the material and the mental. To keep us from getting too heady about things, we’re reminded that it’s good to get out and have fun, to enjoy ourselves and live life, even if only to get out of our own heads for a while. We’re being guided to do the inner work, to be sure, which comes in the form of being more self-aware, paying attention to our thoughts and choosing ones that are more positive, therefore deliberately improving our vibration. We’re also reminded that we’re powerful, we’re worthy, and we’ve got what it takes to achieve our goals. But it’s also good to have fun along the way—in fact, that might be the most important part.

The Four of Pentacles brings a stable, grounded influence for September, especially in the areas of home, family, relationships, finances, and career. We may be asked to focus on solutions and imagine ourselves in the better circumstances we desire. Supporting those desires with the belief that we are worthy of living our dreams and fully capable of achieving and realizing them is a powerful aid to our manifestations. The Four of Pentacles says stability is imminent and not only possible, but ready and waiting for us to line up with it and receive it. The presence of so many major arcana cards in this month’s reading signifies major change and developments on the horizon. Something is transforming beneath the surface, or more accurately, in the energetic, and is preparing to make its way into the physical. Week four of July looks especially promising for manifestations, with the Eight of Wands signifying powerful momentum and rapid forward movement. With Strength coming in as the card signifying this month’s energies, we’re reminded that we have what it takes to move through this period successfully. We can call on our inner strength to prepare ourselves mentally and emotionally for the change that lies ahead.

If nothing is certain but change, this beautiful card gives us reassurance that we’ve got what it takes  to not only get through it, but to ride the wave and come out on top. New approaches and ideas may make themselves known to us this week, and we are guided to flow with the energies that feel best to us, as that is the stream where we will find our truest alignment.

This card says we have what it takes to succeed. Strength can arrive like a pat on the back, congratulating us for getting to where we are now. Something is ending. With the cards of the previous two weeks, The Wheel of Fortune brought something energetically to a close, making room for what the Ace of Pentacles ushered in. This progression of events has allowed something to finally and completely make its transition out of our experience. We may need to do what is needed this week to finally let go of whatever has left. You’ve got this, reminds The Magician; you have all the tools you need to create whatever you want. 

Q1: Overall energies of May: The Magician

The Magician comes in with a reminder that we create our realities. We get to mould and shape outcomes through what we focus on, believe, and expect. This month, we may become especially aware of our own power as we align with our truth and strengthen our confidence. Life on Earth affords us a great palette from which we can select the ingredients we want to play with and choose what to include in our experience. Knowing—believing—that we can have whatever we ask for brings it to us with surety.

While this card seems action-oriented, the best action we can take is inspired action that comes to us when we are vibing high. It’s like they say: consider the source. If the inspired action comes when you’re not feeling so good, it’s better to get into a high-flying place and choose from there.

Q4: Week 3: Queen of Wands

Wands signify the will and manifestation, and this queen is very much in her power. She’s confident and creative, and her abundant life is evidence of her fertility and her ability to create what she desires. Let the mind be a fertile garden, says the queen. Do not let the weeds into your garden. Choose your thoughts with care and go easy on yourself if you falter. Simply pivot to choose thoughts that reflect what you want to focus on when you catch yourself in a place you don’t want to be. Flow and trust yourself. Practice yields improvement.

If this card is the guidance for the month, then it may be inviting us to change where we’re focused to improve our vibration. That could mean intentionally shifting our thoughts to the positive and focusing on the solution to activate what is wanted and allow the solutions to flow in. Doing this consistently can be a game changer.
