Gaining Perspective

Like The Hanged Man in the tarot, we could all sometimes use a change in perspective. But this can present its own challenges. How do we know when we need to step back from something, think outside of the box, gain further clarity? The short answer is: when we feel stuck or stagnant, when we aren’t progressing, when we feel the excitement and enthusiasm for something we once celebrated or looked forward to has vanished. When the ideas aren’t coming or the next steps aren’t presenting themselves.

Tarot can be helpful when it comes to seeking advice or guidance. If you’re here reading this blog, you probably know that already. Beyond that, finding clarity can be a phone call (or text message, or email, or visit) away. Conversations with others can open our eyes to things we never considered before. That one friend (you know the one) who helps you figure things out just through asking questions or making casual observations. Talking with people you know less well can also be eye-opening, as they may be able to offer insights more objectively.

Gaining perspective is usually simple—and often, the simpler, the better (or more effective). Getting out in nature, going somewhere you’ve never been before, spending time away from your usual environment can do wonders. Something like this is often the catalyst that gets the ideas flowing again. After time away from the usual scenery, especially if you’ve been confined to a certain locale due to the pandemic, you tend to come back with fresh eyes.

If we’ve been holding onto a problem for a while, it can be hard to let go of the need to find the solution, but that is often exactly what is needed for it to make itself known. When we shift our focus to something we can appreciate or we otherwise get into the receiving mode, we create a path that allows what we’ve been asking for to flow to us. Followers of the Law of Attraction know this well. Let go to receive. It’s usually when we stop looking for the answer that the answer comes.

For all you seekers, here’s a spread you can use to support your process:

  3. How can I gain perspective?

Trusting the Process

Photo & painting by Victoria Constantino

Imagine you’re driving down a road at night. The only illumination is coming from your headlights, and beyond that, the rest is a mystery, shrouded in darkness. You trust that the road continues beyond what you can see, so you keep driving, the guidelines painted on the road snaking off endlessly into the hidden distance.

The healing journey is a little bit like that, and so is life. We keep going, because we trust that there will be a next thing, and a next, that we won’t suddenly cease to exist or fall off into planar nothingness. The healing journey is ours to navigate. It’s important that we trust the guideposts to show us the way. In order to see them, though, we must be paying attention.

Doing the work sometimes means navigating through darkness. Sometimes our only light comes from within, but our inner light is the brightest light of all. Once we uncover it, we remember who we are; we remember our truth. We may reach a point where we decide that we want to discard everything that covers up that light. Through a process of healing, clearing, and releasing—one layer at a time—we discover how brightly we can really shine.

As long as we keep moving and keep desiring to heal and grow, we will. No matter how blocked off we are or how deep our pain, we can reach that heart-opened place of allowing where the answers flow to us and the guideposts light up like beacons. Where we flow easily in alignment with our higher self and receive our highest guidance as naturally as we inhale breath into our lungs.

The more we trust, the more we let go of our grip and relax the need to control outcomes. That’s when things start to come together. Great ideas flow to us, solutions spring up in our path, and we realize suddenly how far we have come. We look back on the times we leaned into trust and flowed with the process, and understand that it led us to exactly where we needed to be.

Opening the Heart

Photo & painting by Victoria Constantino

We hear a lot about opening our hearts, but what does it really mean and how do we do it? Opening the heart can be a very different experience for each one of us, but ultimately, opening the heart is about allowing ourselves to feel what we hold within. All of the emotions—the pain, the joy, the heartache, the loneliness, the happiness, the excitement, the thrill of being alive—all of it. If our hearts have been closed for a while, it can be challenging to know where to begin. When we allow ourselves to feel what is there, we may have a lot of unpleasant emotions to work through. Emotional release is an important part of the process. Usually, when we close our hearts, we are shuttering it against the pain and the things we don’t want to feel, look at, or deal with. We may have been so busy or focused on other aspects of our lives that we haven’t taken time for ourselves in…how long? That phrase we hear so often, “doing the work,” sounds hard, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some places to start:

  1. Write out your feelings. You can burn the paper as a symbol of release or write everything out in a journal.
  2. Go out into nature and let your heart have its say. Really listen.
  3. Spend time with animals.
  4. Connect with people who make you feel—whether they inspire you, bring you joy, or make you laugh.
  5. Laughter is the best medicine.
  6. Meditate. Don’t force, flow. Allow your mind to quiet and become a receiver. You may be surprised to hear, or feel, your heart speak when the mind is silent.
  7. Spend time in self-care. This can mean a lot of things, from physical routines to listening to music. When you focus on simply caring for your body and mind, it brings cleansing, purification, and renewal.
  8. Listen to music that moves you. If you play an instrument, play to your heart’s content. Lose yourself in the music. Really feel it.
  9. If you are artistically inclined, paint, sculpt, craft, draw. Do whatever it is you do and flow.
  10. Getting into the flow state is a powerful way of attuning to our core essence. Some achieve it through listening to music, others through physical activity like dance and running, and others from creating art. There are many ways to get into the flow state. However you access it, you will know when you get there. Hours go by that feel like minutes. You become so completely absorbed in something that you lose all sense of time and your physical location. You are simply one with your focus.

Many, if not all, of the above are not only ways of opening the heart, but also ways of healing. That isn’t so surprising. The heart is powerful. It’s where the soul resides. It’s the center of our being-ness and the throne of our core essence. It is a treasure trove, an endless cave of wonders just waiting to be explored. There may be shadows to face before we can enter the splendor of the cave, but they are paltry in comparison to the magnificence that awaits us. Those shadows are well worth confronting; they don’t like being looked at anyway, and dissipate when we face them. Once we gain safe passage to the beauty that lies within us, we have taken the first step to the most beautiful and rewarding journey we will ever take.

The Pilgrim’s Path

Before we can rise like the Phoenix from the ashes, we first have to burn.

Before we can rise to the summit, we must first climb the mountain.

When we are meant to walk the pilgrim’s path, it rises up to meet us. Once we take the first step, there is no turning back, and the journey we take changes us forever. Our own shadows take form, writ large across the path, and we are unable to pass until we face them. Fear, illusion, our own weaknesses and shortcomings, all take shape and demand we look at them. They confront us, and there is no choice but to do the inner work. It is only through healing that they dissipate, allowing us safe passage.

This journey may take place once in a lifetime, and it only happens for some. At the end of it, we stand looking at ourselves as we were when we first began, and find we are hardly recognizable. The person at the start of the journey was mere clay, unshaped, formless. The journey itself is what moulds us.

As the fifth day of the second month, today may bring positive change, ushering it forth with certainty, stability, and sureness that may be swift or catch us by surprise in the strength of its arrival. Good news is indicated today overall. Today may bring expansion and fulfillment. Now through the next few weeks, we are guided to be aware of our thoughts, words, and actions more so than usual; a keen awareness of our environment and our internal landscape will serve us well during this Mercury retrograde period. We best honor ourselves when we believe in our own potential and capabilities. Keeping our expectations positive will go far. We are reminded that we receive what we believe and that others often deliver to us what we expect of them.

All of the numbers in today’s date add up to twelve, and three. New manifestations are being borne out of partnerships and collaborations. We may find ourselves aware of our own potential, and also of the need to reclaim our power and sovereignty in certain areas of life. Personal freedom is in focus now. Staying aligned with our purpose and goals and reminding ourselves of our achievements and personal growth may be helpful. We are capable of great things, and every moment holds the potential to begin something magnificent. Allowing ourselves to fully experience joy will help us to grow and also heals the heart. This weekend, consider doing something nice for yourself and for someone else. We are guided now to fill our own cups so we can show up in the best way for ourselves and others.

Mantra: I welcome positivity, growth, freedom, and positive change. I stand strong in my sovereignty and integrity.

As the fourth day of the second month, today brings in strong stabilizing energies. We may notice shifts taking place in our lives, minds, and hearts that are helping to strengthen us on all fronts. Energy that begins in the heart or the mind can flow outward to inform the rest of our lives. We can bring in this energy more strongly and help to integrate it within us by flowing and allowing ourselves to receive it, and by releasing resistance. Today, noticing where we feel blocked or what feels out of alignment can be a gift; as we notice this resistance, we can set the intention to clear it and welcome in energies of ease, grace, and allowing.

Forgiveness helps us to find closure and stability within ourselves. Forgiving ourselves and others is strongly in focus today. Forgiveness first takes place within the heart. We can decide to forgive, and it is good to set this intention, but forgiveness is not complete until it is felt and all aspects of the past released. We can gain clarity on what we may still be holding onto that isn’t serving us, on what we need to let go of, by writing it out. We are guided to follow our instincts regarding steps we can take to gain closure. When we forgive, it also helps to clear karma and allows us to move on and exit cycles in our lives.

All of the numbers in today’s date add up to eleven, and two. Eleven being a gateway number that contains energies of passing through into something new, and two holding energies of partnership and cooperation, we may be working with our team in spirit, with our higher self, and divine allies as we work toward moving into the next steps in our lives. We may be seeking a higher path, and today we can gain clarity on our next steps through meditation, tuning into the intuition, and listening to the heart. Noticing the thoughts, memories, and fragments of song that arise unbidden in the mind can also provide clarity, as they may be messages from our support team.

Mantra: I breathe in the highest light and exhale all that does not serve my highest good. I breathe in the light and love of pure divine consciousness.

As the third day of the second month, today brings forward motion and progress. Keywords today are prosperity, peace, and truth. We are guided to nurture a stable foundation of integrity within ourselves and to endeavor to practice integrity in all that we do. In this retrograde period, we will benefit from slowing down even when things around us are speeding up, taking our time with our work and practices and diligently, thoroughly, and methodically working toward our goals. Giving ourselves time to focus on the tasks at hand will help to ensure that what we produce is of the highest quality.

We are guided to maintain balance within ourselves and to do regular self-checks to ensure we are meeting our own needs. This week, we may need to lean more into compassion for others and confidence within ourselves, yet confidence that stems from a place of honesty rather than ego. Endeavoring to understand our own true nature will help us to move forward with more confidence, compassion, and depth of understanding. Connecting with what is in our hearts will enable us to connect more deeply with others.

All of the numbers in today’s date add up to ten. We may be gaining closure and seeing things wrap up as we prepare to move on to what comes next. Flowing into each day and the changes that lie ahead is beneficial and allows for greater ease in our lives when we are not introducing resistance. This week, we are guided to focus on the ways we can honor our physical bodies, whether by making adjustments in our diets to ensure we are eating more fruits and vegetables, eating clean, getting exercise, or beautifying the space around us so that it is more comfortable and pleasing. These small adjustments can have big impacts on our mood and on our ability to focus, concentrate, and gain more enjoyment out of everyday life.

Mantra: I flow with positive changes and allow what is for my highest good to arrive to me with ease. I hold more compassion for myself and for others.

As the second day of the second month, partnerships, collaborations, and cooperation are in focus. Our dealings with others today and throughout the week may have a great impact, and it could be of critical importance how we choose to respond in any given situation. We are guided to facilitate harmony at all times, and to always look toward positive solutions and amicable resolutions. Something of great magnitude may be fostered through positive communication; pivotal collaborations could be born this week that mark a significant point of change, a fulcrum upon which something pivots, a path-opener.

All of the numbers in today’s date add up to nine, which can be a number of expansion as much as it is about strength, integrity, and endings. We may be already aware of what is not serving us or may simply have a knowing that there is something better awaiting us. Setting intentions now for desired improvements plants a seed that has the potential to sprout at a later time. We are creating our reality in every moment through our desires, thoughts, and beliefs, and we have the power to shift our reality at any time. Anything that we have given sufficient attention to that has built up the requisite momentum can be borne into our lives. Focusing on growth today is beneficial, as is considering the areas of our lives we want to strengthen. The right people, opportunities, and circumstances have a way of showing up in divine right timing.

Mantra: I facilitate harmony and cooperation in my dealings with others. I invite unconditional love into all of my communications for the highest possible outcome.

As the first day of the second month, today brings the opportunity for new partnerships and bright new beginnings in all aspects of life. Fresh starts and positive outcomes are all indicated today. The image I’m being shown is of a sparkling ocean and a bright sun lighting up a new dawn. The shoreline glitters and the ocean yields treasures in many forms as they wash up on the shore. This is a reminder that there is enough for everyone and that we live in an abundant universe, and also an indicator of the fresh new energies that are flowing in to support us. A new dawn is opening up to us in glittering expanse and welcoming us into the fresh, bright new energies that are flowing in. The ocean’s attributes of cleansing and purification are also indicated. We are guided now (as always) to maintain high levels of energetic cleanliness through intentional deep breathing and meditation.

All of the numbers in today’s date add up to eight, a number of infinite abundance. Today may bring new opportunities on all fronts, as well as pleasant surprises and the opportunity for advancements. Something beautiful awaits each one of us; if only we believe, we will receive. We can best open up to the wonderful gifts that await us through knowing we are worthy (we are, infinitely so) and that we are deserving of all we desire. Remembering that we first receive the ideas for our goals and dreams because we are worthy and also because we are ready for them can be helpful. Today, the energies are supporting us in setting intentions and in creating new goals not only for this month, but for the remainder of this year and the time that stretches out before us. We are infinite, divine beings of light and we can achieve and live all that we desire. Nothing is out of our reach. All is available to us and we are fully capable of achieving even our loftiest goals.

Mantra: I breathe deeply into the knowing of my true worthiness and exhale all that does not support my highest good. I breathe deeply into the knowing that I am fully capable of achieving great things and living my best life.
